The last two years we have definitely been witnessing the rebirth of Hip Hop groups such as “Odd Future”, “Asap Mob”, “Black Hippy” and even “YMCMB” could be considered as an hip hop group. I am in no means comparing these outfits to the greatest rap group of all time “Wu-tang Clan”, because no one will ever be able to impact the hip hop world as much as the Clan did. However if there is one group that has the ability to pull off an outstanding group album, look no further than the G.O.O.D Music family.
Cruel Summer is, in many ways, a vessel for the most stylish and arguably the most talented collective/family “G.O.O.D Music” to showoff their versatility and raw talent, fusing their various multiple styles of rap into one cohesive product. As expected Cruel Summer is a star-studded event. It features the likes of R Kelly, The-Dream, Marsha Ambrosius, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah. The most surprising feature was Ma$e, Seriously Ye why did you go and put this whack rapper on Pusha’s killer track, you better not be trying to sign or restore this muthafuka’s career. With that said Pusha T for me stole the show on Cruel Summer. Every verse he spat was absolutely flawless, I Cannot wait for his next album. Hopefully he keeps the features too a minimum so I can just here this beast spit rhymes. Surprisingly even 2 chain’s verses were also amazing, now I can finally appreciate and understand why Kanye signed him to G.O.O.D Music.
My biggest complaint of the album was that Chief Keef’s “I Don’t Like” remix made it to the album, I am sure you guys had an extra original song kicking around. I admit the original of “I Don’t Like” and the remix are catchy but come on G.O.O.D Music don’t support another whack rapper, you already forced us to listen to Ma$e.
Cruel Summer is not the masterpiece that I expected. Nonetheless the album is still a solid offering from the G.O.O.D Music family and is quite pleasant to the ears. Overrated? Maybe a little bit! But Cruel Summer still sounds pretty damn good. However let me STATE not having Q-tip and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) on the album was a major disappoint for me. Why was Common, one of the greatest MC’s/ Poets featured so little? Come on Ye!!! You cannot have these titans in the G.O.O.D Music family and under utilize them. Hopefully their absence means that they were hard at work in the studio working on their sole efforts. I guess we will have to wait and see what these legends have in store for us. I am sure the wait will be worth it. In the mean time go on a bang Cruel Summer, it should tide you over until the future releases from the entire G.O.O.D Music fam.
